You could save $6000 p.a. by rewiring your house.
Recent research carried out by the lobby group Rewiring Australia suggests that Australian households could save up to $6000 a year by 2035 by rewiring their house to replace old fossil fuel technologies with renewable electrical technology. Collectively Australia could save over $40 billion a year by 2030.
The main savings would come from replacing fossil fuels with electricity generated by household solar panels. An electric car charged by your solar panels would remove the need to pay for fuel. Replacing polluting gas top cookers with induction cooktops powered by home battery and solar would remove your gas bill.
In their report, Household Electrification: Savings in the Suburbs, Rewiring Australia analysed Australian power use; how we power our cars, space heating, water heating, kitchens, laundries, and swimming pools. Our abundance of sunlight and wind and the relatively long distances that we need to distribute electricity means that we have a greater potential to benefit from the electrification of our homes and the retirement of fossil fuels than other comparable nations.
About 42% of Australia’s fossil fuel emissions are linked to our homes. There are about 10 million dwellings in Australia, Dr Saul Griffith an American Engineer working with Rewiring Australia claims that “[The household sector is] the easiest sector to decarbonise. They’re ready to go right away, we have the right technologies.
“And, if we do that aggressively, this decade, we buy ourselves time to solve the slightly harder-to-solve problems, which is steel, beef, agriculture, aluminum, cement and our other harder-to-decarbonise sectors”
“If we electrify the two cars in the average household, we put oversized solar on their rooftops, we electrify their water heaters, electrify the kitchen and electrify any space heating in that household by 2030, we’ll be saving [them] $5,000–$6,000 per year.”
Electrical work that needs to be done to electrify homes includes, provision of 3 phase power for some solar systems, provision of charging stations for EVs, provision of separate circuits to replace gas cooktops with induction, installation of smart meters, wiring for battery systems and upgrading outdated gas hot water systems.
All of the electrical works need to be carried out by a qualified electrician and some of them require a level 2 electrician. Loax would be happy to provide a quote for any work needed to electrify your home or business. Please call us on 1300 788 828 or contact us via email.
